Penwise widgets for your home screen and lock screen
Your next shot, your estimated medication level and your weight, on the home screen of an iPhone or an Android phone, and on the iPhone lock screen. They keep up on their own and read from your phone only.
Three widgets
Each one shows figures from your own log, in the language of the app, with the units and the decimal separator you use in Penwise.
-
Next shot
A countdown in days, hours or minutes, the date and time, the medication, the suggested injection site, how many shots in a row you took on time, and a bar of twelve blocks for the cycle. When a shot is late the widget says so and since when. The medium size has a Log shot button: it opens Penwise on the log sheet with the dose from your plan and the suggested site already filled in.
-
Med level
The estimated amount of medication in your body now, with a rising, falling or steady note, and the cycle curve from your last shot to the next: solid up to now, dashed ahead, the next shot marked. The level is an estimate modelled from published half-lives, not a measurement. This widget needs Penwise+.
-
Weight
Your latest weight, how it changed this week or since you started, and a trend line. The medium size adds your goal and an Add weight button that opens the weight entry in Penwise.
Sizes
-
iPhone
Small and medium on the home screen. On the lock screen, circular, rectangular and inline widgets, on iOS 16 or later.
-
Android
A wide one-row strip (4×1), small (2×2 and 3×2) and medium (4×2). Each widget can be resized down to a single row, and its text is laid out again for the size you choose.
Looks like your app
The widgets follow the theme and the accent colour of Penwise: a graphite panel when the app is dark, a light one when it is light. On an iPhone with a tinted or clear home screen they take the colour iOS gives them.
Kept current without opening the app
Penwise writes what will change over the next 7 days: every countdown step, the moment a shot becomes overdue, midnight and the estimated level hour by hour. The widget then changes on schedule. If you do not open Penwise for 7 days the widgets say "Open Penwise to refresh" instead of showing old figures as current.
How to add a widget
In Penwise, open Settings, then Widgets, to see every widget and size drawn with your own data. On Android, Add to home screen places a widget directly where your launcher allows it. Otherwise follow the steps below.
-
Android
- Touch and hold an empty spot on your home screen.
- Tap Widgets.
- Find Penwise and drag a widget onto your home screen.
-
iPhone
- Touch and hold an empty area of your Home Screen until the apps jiggle.
- Tap Edit in the upper-left corner, then Add Widget. On older iOS versions, tap + instead.
- Find Penwise, choose a size, tap Add Widget, then Done.
-
On the iPhone lock screen
Touch and hold the Lock Screen until Customize appears, tap Customize, then Add Widgets, and pick Penwise.
Privacy
A widget reads figures that Penwise saves on your phone. Nothing is sent anywhere for it, and Penwise has no server for your health records. A widget never saves a shot, a weight or a check-in itself: its buttons only open Penwise on the matching sheet, so a stray tap on the home screen cannot create an entry.
-
Figures on widgets
In Settings, then Widgets, choose to show the figures, to hide them while the iPhone is locked (it follows your iPhone setting for lock-screen widgets), or to show shapes only: the cycle and the charts without numbers, and the spoken summary leaves them out too. Hiding while locked is iPhone only; on Android you can show the figures or show shapes only.
-
Spoken summary
Every widget carries a spoken summary for VoiceOver and TalkBack, for example when it shows no figure yet or needs you to open the app.
What is free
Widgets are free. Next shot and Weight work for everyone, with no time limit. The Med level widget shows the estimated level with Penwise+, which is included for your first 14 days. Without it the widget says it needs Penwise+ and shows nothing else.
